In a report conducted through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, entitled Status and Trends in the U.S. Voluntary Green Power Market (2012 Data), authors Jenny Heeter and Terry Nicholas review the voluntary market for renewable energies and identify market trends. The voluntary green power market totaled more than 48 million MWh in 2012, with about 1.9 million customers participating. The supply continues to be dominated by wind, though solar is increasing its share of utility green pricing programs. Prices for voluntary renewable energy certificates (RECs) increased to above $1/MWh. The report highlights the scale of these trends by including a summary of many large businesses and organizations which have been taking strides towards using more renewable electricity.
